If you’ve recently built a brand website or are looking to boost page visits or conversions, you might be wondering “how to SEO”. Search Engine Optimisation is a complex task with lots of elements. But with the right SEO strategy in place, results can be significant.

So, without further ado, here are some tip SEO tricks to get you started.

  1. Do Keyword Research

Search engines such as Google only want to deliver the best and most relevant content in their search engine results pages (SERPs). Anything less would ruin their reputation as a go-to source for quick facts and information. There are millions of websites out there, however, so it’s your job to stand out from the crowd by making your content topics obvious.

If you’ve a nail salon for instance, but don’t include keywords such as ‘nail salon,’ ‘nail technician,’ ‘manicurist’ or local search terms such as ‘nail salon Botley’ into your content – how is Google supposed to deem your site relevant? This is why keyword research is so important. It’s all about thinking what people might type to find you and building a content marketing strategy around those specific words. To find relevant keywords you can.

  • Brainstorm what you would search for a specific service
  • Use Google Analytics to find out what people are searching to reach your site
  • Type a keyword into google and look at the other suggestions
  • Check out competitors and what words they are using in their content titles/URLs
  • Use Keyword research tools such as KWFinder
  1. Use Short and long-tail keywords

Having a list of keywords is a great start. You can use tool such as Ubersuggest to analyse search volumes for specific words and prioritise those with high volumes. These are usually short, popular keywords that will highlight your relevance to Google. It’s also important to use long-tail keywords. These are longer and more specific meaning they usually result in higher conversion rates. Good ways to find long-tail keywords include:

  • Using Google Suggest. This is a great source for long-tail keyword variations.
  • Using Google Related Searches. These appear at the bottom of the SERP, below the first page of organic results.
  1. Use Keywords in the Right Places

Keywords should be placed in specific places to make it easy for the Google spider to crawl indexed pages and pull up the most relevant content. Here’s where they should be included:

  • Title tag
  • Meta description
  • Body content
  • Links within content
  • URL
  • Graphics
  • Incoming links
  1. Give Pages a Logical Structure

Search engines need to understand the logic of your page and the importance of each section in order to return the most relevant snippets and results. So use Header 1 tags for titles and Header 2 tags for subtitles. H3 tags are for points within a H2 section. Ensure keywords are used for titles and subtitles to boost relevancy. Remember, it’s all about making it easy for search engines to pick up your content.

  1. Think About Position 0

Featured snippets appear above the first organic search result on Google listings. These tends to answer user questions with featured content offering the clearest response, most useful response in Google’s eyes. You can feature in Position 0 even if your website is not on Page 1 of Google’s SERPs. To do this, it’s a good idea to create question and answer content based around specific keywords. For example you could write, ‘What is SEO’ followed by a short, but to-the-point and keyword rich paragraph that could be easily used by Google as a featured snippet.
