“And now, for a question that came in from multiple folks independently. We’ve answered this question in variations over the years, but I thought it would be good to have a modern look at it. The question is whether the keywords meta tag matters for Google SEO? Matt Cuts, one of the early engineers at Google answered this question back in 2009. Just to be clear from the start, the answer is still, no. We do not use the contents of the keyword meta tag in Google Search. It’s fine, however, for you to use the keywords meta tag if you want to use them for something. It doesn’t cause any problems with Google Search. It’s usually small enough to not change the overall page size, so there’s no strong reason to remove them from a page. To find out more about meta tags that we do use in search, we have an article for you in our documentation.

Most of the time you’ll be looking at the description meta tag, and perhaps the robots meta tag. Technically, the title element is not a meta tag, but it’s often treated as one. These are all elements that can have an effect on the search results for your pages. And again, Google Search does not use the keywords meta tag. Googlebot won’t even notice if you leave tasty cookies there, sorry.

And that was it for today. If there’s something on your mind, I’d love to hear from you with the hashtag, ask Googlebot. Bye.”
