SEO techniques for accountants

Algorithm updates are becoming more frequent, meaning it’s harder for SEOs to ensure sites continue to rank well. But there are some SEO key techniques that marketers for accountancy firms can use to ensure they have the edge over competitors. Let’s look at these now.

  • Posting content when nobody else is

The phrase ‘content is king’ has been ubiquitous in marketing for over two decades, and it holds true today. In order to enjoy good rankings in the search engines, it’s necessary to produce high-quality content on a regular basis.

One strategy being used by some SEOs is posting content when nobody else does. This is because Google doesn’t work on weekdays from 9-5; its robots crawl websites 24/7, and recrawl many sites every few days. With content management systems, scheduling posts to go live is simple, meaning you can post at different times of day, at weekends, and on bank holidays – in other words, when most people are focusing on other things. If you’re being more proactive than competitors, this could be picked up by Google, and result in more favourable rankings.

  • Carry out informal UX testing

A good indicator of site performance is the amount of time users spend on the website and whether they click through various pages. In order to find out whether your site could be improved, why not ask friends or others in your industry to give their feedback? In addition to useful comments, there will also be dedicated users browsing through several pages on your site, which is sure to help with SEO efforts, especially if you’ve just launched a redesign.

  • Link building in a new way

Link building is one of the core aspects of SEO, and a traditional technique is to create quality, data-driven content and then source websites that would be willing to link back to it as a resource.

This, however, is time-consuming, and also means you have no control over which links point back to you, or what anchor text is used.

An alternative is to identify websites that have already written on finance or accounting topics, and offer additional data to support and enhance their content. Many publishers will be pleased to have their articles bulked up or refined in exchange for a link back to your data.

  • Update your content

If you find that some of your pages, which used to rank well, are now slipping down the rankings, try refreshing and updating the content. Pages with statistics, in particular, should be updated regularly to reflect the latest figures, and additional information can be included that might prove useful to customers.
