Mobilegeddon came into effect 2015
Okay. Today, I want to have a chat with you about something which is not old school, but it happened quite some time ago, but we’re still seeing people, we’re still seeing clients who haven’t yet brought themselves us to the curve, so we’re going to talk about mobile, or something specifically called Mobilegeddon. It was a phrased coined back in April 2015 when this came into effect, and basically it’s not looking at the fact that if your website is not mobile friendly then Google’s going to start not de-ranking you but it won’t start ranking you very well for mobile search results.
Mobile traffic is majority traffic
And mobile search results, or rather mobile traffic, can be up to about an average of 60% of your traffic to your website, so it’s very, very important. I’ll talk to about mobile in just a second, about how you use your mobile I should say. Now, I’m going to go and have a look here back at my old retro phone. Now, you can go ahead and use websites on this sort of phone, but frankly I couldn’t draw an iPhone. I will rather be a bit boring, so I’ll use my old retro phone here.
Just think about how you use your mobile phone for a second. Okay? You wake up in the morning, you probably use it as your alarm system to go ahead and wake up in the morning. You’re probably going to be lying in bed first thing in the morning and actually browsing something, or checking your emails, or quickly scanning a blog or go on Facebook, whatever it might be. You’re probably using it before you’ve even got out of bed. Okay?
Then once you’ve had your shower, and brushed your teeth, and so on and so forth you’re going to go downstairs have your breakfast. Chances are you’re actually using your phone as well whilst your having breakfast. Okay? Then what happens? You’re going to go to work, as simple as that. You’re going to go to work. You might use it throughout the day just for work purposes, but then lunchtime comes around and I would bet good money on the fact that you’re using your mobile phone during your lunch hour, checking up on the news, checking up on the weather, whatever it might be. Checking to see as to what you’re going to be doing on the weekend. So again, you’re on your mobile phone.
Then you come home in the evening. You’ve got dinnertime and you’ve got that period just before dinnertime when there’s nothing really going on. You’re probably on your phone then as well, as well as during the breaks on the TV adverts later on in the evening. And lastly, just before we go to bed the chances are you’ve also got your phone as well before you set it for your alarm the next day. You’re just going to give it that one last look over.
What I’m trying to get at is that your mobile phone is attached to you throughout the course of the day. You use it for searches, for so many different things whether you realize it or not. Okay? And therefore, so do your customers and so do your clients. These people here will be using their mobile phone constantly and they’ll be searching constantly. So to go back to this, if your website is not mobile friendly you’re potentially losing up to 60% more traffic through having a non-mobile related website, or having a responsive website, or having a separate mobile domain, whatever it might be.
Google mobile friendly check tool
Do go onto Google. There is actually a free Google check. Just type in mobile friendly checker into Google and you can use a free Google lookup to check to see if your website is Google friendly, is mobile friendly or not. But I’m saying this, this is an old piece of news from 2015, but I’m still meeting customers and clients today who do not have mobile friendly websites, and I cannot stress it enough. It is so vitally important. Okay?
So our next piece of news, or next video, hopefully won’t be a flashback to 2015, or a previous year shall I say. It’ll be a little bit more personal and more up-to-date, but we wanted to relay the importance of this one here. I’ll see you for the next video for another one of our Whitefish Wednesday videos, and until then see you later. Bye.
