Marketing Ideas for Your Accountancy Firm

Marketing your accounting firm is an important part of generating new business, and with the online space proving more competitive than ever, it’s vital you put effort into your digital presence. But where do you start and how can you invest your time and energy into practices that will provide a return on your investment? Here, we delve into how you can get started with your marketing efforts, with our 8 simple marketing ideas for your accountancy firm.

  1. Write a blog post

Perhaps you’ve got an hour spare at the end of a busy day. Or maybe something in the news that’s related to finance or accounting has caught your attention and you want to inform your clients about it. Now is the perfect time to create a blog post. Before you get started, think about which audience your post is aimed at – small start-ups, high net worth individuals, those who complete self-assessment tax returns, non-doms – and ensure everything you say in your article is relevant to them. Include key points they’ll find useful, and try to keep it jargon-free wherever possible. Remember to use sub-headers, bullet points, and similar to make the content digestible too.

  1. Write up a case study

Have you had a particular success story recently that would be worth sharing? Case studies are a great way to showcase how your accounting firm has made a difference to a client, and can be shared on your website as well as on social platforms. Obtain the client’s permission, and where possible a quote from them, and note down what the objective was, your firm’s approach and the results.

  1. Be active on social media

If you have social media profiles but you don’t pay them much attention, now is the time to start. Set aside ten minutes of every day – perhaps before or after your lunch break – to post something to LinkedIn, comment on a client post, or share something relevant to your social pages. Simply reminding your followers that you’re here will keep you at the front of their minds as and when they need your services. You can also make the effort to engage with the kinds of businesses you’d like to have as clients. Comment on their posts every so often if you have something useful to say, or simply follow them and keep an eye on what makes them tick.

  1. Update your Google Business Profile

Online marketing for accountants needn’t always be labour-intensive. Doing something simple like updating your Google Business Profile can have a positive impact. Make sure your address, contact details and opening hours are up to date, and provide any extra information that might be relevant to customers. You could even nip round the office and take a few pictures to add to the profile. Whatever you add, just ensure it matches what’s on the business’ website, and that the tone of voice you use in any copy you add is consistent with that of your other channels.

  1. Request reviews

Another activity that doesn’t take much time, but that can have a big impact on your marketing, is requesting reviews. These not only show potential clients that you’re a great business to work with, they also signal to search engines that your business is trustworthy and authoritative. Send emails out to recent customers and ask them to leave feedback on your Google Business Profile or on another site of your choice such as Trustpilot.

  1. Set up an email database

If you don’t have one, set up a list of email addresses for clients, and add them to an email service such as MailChimp or Zoho. You can then send email newsletters or tailored content to your various email lists, covering issues such as upcoming tax changes or deadlines, or informing them of any changes to your team. Even if you only commit to sending a quarterly newsletter, it means you’re regularly reminding people that you exist and are available to help. Keep your emails short and concise, with links to web pages or blog posts that provide more information.

  1. Check your web content

Another task that can be broken down into bitesize pieces is checking your website content. Systematically go through and check each service page to ensure the content is still relevant and up to date, and make tweaks where necessary. You can also think about the keywords you’re using, ensuring the primary keyword is different for each page and that, where relevant it’s incorporated into headings. For example, since you have a greater chance of success with local and more specific keywords, you might want to change a header that simply reads “Bookkeeping” to “Bookkeeping services in [location]”. This can help your rankings for searches conducted by people in the local area, as it clearly indicates to the search engines where you’re based.

  1. Add internal links in your web copy

Another fairly simple thing you can do is ensure there are text-based links between pages on your website. If you’ve created a blog post about VAT changes, for example, and you offer VAT services to businesses, link a relevant phrase in the copy to your VAT services page. Also think about linking relevant service pages together with text links. You might add a link between an information page about Inheritance Tax and your estate planning service page.
