After almost ten years of service, the analytics tool we have come to know as Google Webmaster Tools has been renamed as Google Search Console.
The change is a result of consumer feedback – many of its users do not think of themselves as webmasters, and the search giant has consequently chosen a name that aims to include the tool’s entire user base. The change has been rolled out gradually over the past few weeks and is now believed to be complete.
In a statement, Google acknowledged that a range of different people will different needs and objectives use the programme, from SEOs and small business owners to designers and app developers. They said, “To make sure that our product includes everyone who cares about Search, we’ve decided to rebrand Google Webmaster Tools as Google Search Console.”
The move also indicates an objective of capturing new users who may have avoided the tool in the past because they don’t identify as webmasters. The console itself is not expected to undergo any functionality changes.
