As marketing has become more prolific on Facebook, businesses on the social network have seen a decline in the reach of organic posts. Often, as few as 10% of people who have liked your page will actually see the post, and even fewer respond. Here are some tips on engaging your audience and extending your reach without spending a fortune. (Also read up on our previous post on amplifying your content through social media )

Audience participation

Asking your audience for something makes them feel involved and valued in the online community, so where suitable, ask them to interact. This can be an open question (‘where will you be taking your MINI this weekend?’), a request for photos of your buyers using your product, a caption competition... A little imagination can go a long way.

On a related note, ensure that you respond to at least a few of the comments from your audience. Social media marketing is all about building relationships with your customers, so show people that you’re genuinely interested in what they have to say.

Analyse your Facebook data

Facebook insights has come a long way since its inception, so pay attention to what it tells you about when to post and who’s reading. Trial targeted messaging – sending a message to a specific segment based on age or gender – to encourage engagement.

Be selective with "boosts"

If you’re going to pay for boosting Facebook posts, be selective. Your content might be fabulous, but there are bound to be some pieces that lend themselves more naturally to sharing, or can entice users in more readily. Video content is a good example, as is clever titling or appropriate humour. Select only your very best content to boost – and if you choose right, you’ll see good results.

Target your advertising

When boosting posts, ensure you pick a specific audience to show it to. For example, if you’re a luxury tour operator specialising in Spanish holidays and you want to boost a video post on making the perfect paella, don’t just target everyone who’s been to Spain. Select a demographic that fits your product in terms of age and interests for a better response.

Wear your heart on your sleeve

Remember that customers like to know there are real people behind your brand, so don’t be afraid to show some of your personality. Post relevant images that evoke emotion in some way, and have an opinion about things. Starting a discussion on your page is great for brand awareness.
